"Garden On, Vashon!" is a year-round, years-back look at how the residents of a small island in Puget Sound, Washington garden, farm, and cultivate their island home. Located between Seattle and Tacoma in Washington State, Vashon Island and it's barely-linked sister Maury Island were once famous for strawberries, Leghorn chickens, and Olympic berries. Humorist Betty MacDonald wrote about island life in her memoir, "Onions in the Stew." Today this rural place is home to 11,000--retirees, young families, and '70s Back-to-the-Landers, small farmers and ardent environmentalists, crafters, artists, writers and of course gardeners--who all came here to get their fingernails in island dirt. "Garden On, Vashon!" takes you into island gardens and deep into the island's history, as over 100 islanders tell their stories of gardening and farming this specific space. The reader goes on excursions and work parties with the author to learn, for instance, how islanders grow an island tomato or prune an ancient apple orchard, how to grow wine-grapes or find the best local ingredients for compost. With chapters on the island's geology, hydrology and soils, stories of shared gardens and keeping bees, of bringing plants to market and keeping heritage berries alive, the reader will enjoy a portrayal of a community fiercely, eccentrically, and passionately "dug in" to its home place.

This engrossing book combines history, culture, and personalities to create a clear picture of growing plants on an astonishing Vashon Island. For such a small landmass, Vashon island is capable of nurturing a wide variety of plants, as well as a wide variety of passionate gardeners. Ms. Dale describes the characters who've patiently learned to manage the vagaries of soil and weather to bring crops to market, and at the same time create award-winning gardens. So much passion in such a small space. The book also brings to light the profound kindness of Islanders who grow fresh crops for the Food Bank. Such generosity is a great model in these troubling times. Thank you Karen Dale.Product details

Garden On Vashon! Karen Dale 9780989683708 Books Reviews
An inspired blend of the history of farming on Vashon, stories of present day farmers, and detailed gardening advice. The writing is very engaging. If you garden in the Maritime Northwest, you will love this book.
I found Karen Dale’s book to be fascinating, but then my farm and I are mentioned on page seventy. So perhaps I should get down to the question of why would anybody other than a farmer or gardener on Vashon Island be interested in reading this book.
First, I can assure the potential reader that this book is chock full of information about all aspects of gardening from growing a few flowers to full commercial production. Karen talks about soils in a manner that few other garden writers do. Do you know if your soil depends on bacteria, or microbes to digest materials for plants to eat? Have you ever thought about that before? I hadn’t, yet I am a commercial grower.
Karen covers the history of farming in a small community telling us why this venture or that failed. She interviewed over a hundred small growers to find out what works and what doesn’t. She talks about caring for your fruit trees, growing strawberries and growing that perfect tomato. She details all the ways Islanders compost.
Our climate and soil are most certainly different from yours, but Karen’s book is well worth the read for the wealth of information it holds. She tells the stories of our farms and gardens in an engaging and humble manner that communicates many of the intricacies of being a gardener.
If you want to know more than the simple basics about gardening, Karen’s book is a wonderful resource.
